On Monday, January 25, VGM posted an article titled “Preparing for ZPIC Audits” that contained a linked Word document. (“Preparing for an Audit, How to Respond to a Review & FAQs”). On page 5, the following was included:
Beware of audit triggers. ZPICs and other audit contractors will quickly discover so-called “low-hanging fruit”. These are the easy-to-spot mistakes such as repeatedly using incorrect codes, an abnormal increase in utilization over a given time, or duplicate claims. Another example of a problem that might trigger an audit is using the Social Security or Medicare Health Insurance numbers on the claim form. Rules specifically prohibit using these numbers in the option identification number box on the form to help prevent identity theft. If you must put an identification number on the form, be certain not to use either of those types of numbers.
This was in error. Medicare health insurance numbers are required on the claim form. However, using these numbers on an advanced beneficiary notice (ABN) would be improper. VGM regrets the oversight.
